About St. Theresa of the Child Jesus

St. Theresa of the Child Jesus is a Roman Catholic church in Leeds, West Yorkshire. It is part of the Diocese of Leeds.

Introduction

Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus church in Leeds was opened in 1953 on its present site.

History

The parish was formed in 1930 by Bishop Cowgill, dedicated to St Theresa of Lisieux, with Father Patrick O'Halloran as first parish priest. The church was built on the Presbytery lawn and was a barn-like structure with no central aisle.

Architecture and furnishings

The Baptismal Font is in a central position opposite the main entrance. The original benches were long undulating strips of laminated wood whose edges soon split. In a short space of time the benches were modified and a narrow central aisle was created. One of the larger replacement windows is an abstract stained glass representation of the Creation of the World. Since the turn of the century minor improvements included replacing the organ, restyling the shrine to Saint Theresa and installing handrails.

Parish life

The parish has a St Vincent de Paul conference offering visits and practical and emotional help. The parish runs a Journey & Faith group by appointment in the Newman Centre lounge. The parish runs a food facility with collection boxes in each church porch for non-perishable food items.
