About St Thomas of Canterbury
St Thomas of Canterbury is a Roman Catholic church in Tean, Staffordshire. It is part of the Archdiocese of Birmingham.
Introduction
The architect was E Bower Norris of Manchester-based Hill, Sandy & Norris, previously Sandy & Norris of Stafford.
History
From 1889 the Catholic parishioners of Tean used the old non-conformist chapel as an all-age school and a weekend church, served from St Mary's Cresswell. Before that, Catholics walked three miles over the fields to St Mary's Cresswell. The builders were the locally based Beddoes & O'Dair of Tean. In 2001, after the retirement of the parish priest, the parish began to be served from St Giles. The Lady Chapel has an Art Deco-style stone altar and a mosaic and opus sectile reredos.
Architecture and furnishings
The pews were brought to St Thomas's from St Wilfrid's, Cotton, which in turn had acquired them from Cotton College. The church also has a two metre-high Crucifix from Cotton, restored and installed on the end wall of the sanctuary. The present church was built in 1938 during the Art Deco period of pre-war Britain.
Parish life
Priests who served St Thomas's include Thomas Scott (1889–1924), Timothy Purcell (1924–1931), Raymond Walsh (1931–1949), Gerard Peuleve (1949–1961), and Patrick Meagher (1961–2001).
