About Tyburn Convent & Church
Tyburn Convent & Church is a Roman Catholic church in London, Greater London. It is part of the Archdiocese of Westminster.
Introduction
Tyburn Convent is a monastery in London near the site of the Tyburn Gallows, where more than 100 Catholics were martyred during the Reformation. The community took possession of Tyburn Convent on 3 March 1903. The convent is the Mother House of monasteries worldwide.
History
The Foundress, Marie Adèle Garnier, made Tyburn Convent the home of the Shrine of the English Reformation Martyrs of Tyburn. Mother Marie Adèle Garnier died at Tyburn in 1924. For more than a hundred years the Tyburn community has given the church and city a place of Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration.
Music and liturgy
The community chants the Liturgy of the Hours seven times a day. The community's day is structured around Holy Mass, the Liturgy of the Hours and Eucharistic Adoration.
The community sings hymns of praise with all its skill and intercedes for the needs of all humanity. The community's novitiate lessons include Liturgical Music. At monastic profession, the sister prostrates for the singing of the Litany of the Saints. At monastic profession, the sister sings three times the 'Suscipe'. As the newly professed sister's cowl is put on, the choir joyfully sings a verse of betrothal.
Parish life
The community ministers to guests with sisterly simplicity, offering silence, peace, and a listening ear. The community offers guided Martyrs' Crypt tours, with group visits by prior arrangement and priests may arrange to celebrate Holy Mass at the Altar of the Martyrs. The community's special mission is prayer for the people of England and Wales.
The community is consecrated to prayer for the Church Militant and also comes to the aid of the Church Suffering by prayer and concern for the Holy Souls. The community publishes a bi-annual newsletter. A sister is available once a day to give a guided tour of the Crypt of the Martyrs.
Visiting
There is a small library with good religious books, and a small patio garden (when the weather permits). The community has facilities for groups who may wish to make a day of Private retreat or Recollection.
