About Christ the King, Alfreton

Christ the King, Alfreton is a Roman Catholic church in Alfreton, Derbyshire. It is part of the Diocese of Nottingham.

Introduction

Christ the King in Alfreton opened in 1927 as the first Catholic church in England to carry the name Christ the King.

History

In 1922 Father Heald was made parish priest of a church in poor repair that stayed locked all week, and Father Heald rented a Park Street room with a table, 3 chairs and a bunk. On becoming parish priest, the priest brought Clay Cross into Saint Mary's parish. In August 1923 an appeal began to raise £3000 for a new church on Nottingham Road, and the money was raised. The statue outside the church door is the original statue that once stood on top of the porch.

Architecture and furnishings

The church was extended and a new presbytery built; the previous presbytery stood at the car-park corner where North Street joins Nottingham Road. The last alteration to the church was made in 1981/2, when the Parish Social Centre opened. Once a month, a group meets in the Liturgy Room to weave and make crafts.

Parish life

Parish life includes service from an active SVP Society and from the Legion of Mary. An active Bible study group gathers in the parish every week. Parishioners run a car-pool so that people without transport can attend Mass. Marked disabled parking spaces, ramps and handrails give access to people with mobility issues. A separate church hall is available for the public to hire.

Sacraments and pastoral care

Parishioners on the Parish Pastoral Council work with the parish priest to support and guide parish life. Confession may be requested before Mass and after Mass. Baptism is available when it is requested. Weddings can be celebrated in the church.
