About Saint Patrick and Saint Bridget, Clay Cross
Saint Patrick and Saint Bridget, Clay Cross is a Roman Catholic church in Clay Cross, Derbyshire. It is part of the Diocese of Nottingham.
Introduction
On 1 June 1862 the Bishop of Nottingham consecrated Saint Patrick and Saint Bridget, Clay Cross, whose dedication was made partly in recognition of Irish Catholics who helped develop Clay Cross. From 1881 a resident priest served a Catholic population that was large relative to the size of Clay Cross. In 1882 Father Daniel Meenagh enlarged and refurbished the church, which then comprised a chapel, a nave and a Lady Chapel.
History
Land on Thanet Street was acquired, a basic building was put up, and clergy from Ilkeston, Chesterfield and Mansfield served that building. From 1915 until amalgamation with Saint Mary's Church, Alfreton, in 1922, Mass was available only spasmodically, with priests from other local parishes supplying it. The Catholic tradition in Clay Cross has a closer link with Chesterfield than with Alfreton. An attached cottage was restored so that it could serve as a presbytery.
Townspeople provided a stained glass window and a font as a memorial, and both are visible in the church. On 21 October 1915 Father Meenagh took his own life and was found the next day by his housekeeper, Margaret Divine.
Parish life
Parishioners gather monthly at Thanet House for tea and fellowship. Parish life includes an active SVP Society and an active Legion of Mary. An active Bible study group meets weekly. Religious books are available through a lending library scheme.
Pensioners' lunches and Knit and Natter form part of the regular get-togethers. The Church Parish Lunch Club meets monthly at the Parish Hall.
An active car-pool led by parishioners takes people without transport to Mass. Marked disabled parking spaces, ramps and handrails give access for people with mobility issues. The Parish Pastoral Council is made up of parishioners who work with the parish priest to support and guide parish life.
