Church of Mary, Mother of God, Ponders End is a Roman Catholic church in Enfield, Greater London. It is part of the Archdiocese of Westminster.
Introduction
The Church of Mary, Mother of God in Ponders End, Enfield, within the Archdiocese of Westminster, had its foundation stone laid by Cardinal Bourne in September 1921 and first Mass on Christmas Eve 1924.
History
In 1888 Cardinal Manning sent a corrugated iron building, previously a workshop at the industrial school in Ilford, to be used as a school and church in Alma Road. In 1912 the Redemptorists obtained the land the Church now occupies in Nags Head Road, and a corrugated iron building was built and used as a Church.
Architecture and furnishings
The stained glass windows in the Lady Chapel are a personal tribute, each window representing one of the saints of the Christian names Edward, Ambrose, George, and Joseph.
Parish life
The parish runs groups for prayer, social action, Sacramental preparation, youth work and the support of others. In 1902 the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth were invited to Enfield, and travelled daily from Bow Common to Ponders End to help with the work.
