About Church of St. Michael, Wadebridge
Church of St. Michael, Wadebridge is a Roman Catholic church in Wadebridge, Cornwall. It is part of the Diocese of Plymouth.
Introduction
On 23 July 1947, Bishop Grimshaw blessed and opened the Church of Saint Michael in Wadebridge.
History
The Bodmin Chapter authorised the Wadebridge mission in 1926, permitting one of its members to say Sunday Mass in the Commercial Hotel coffee room. The Wadebridge mission stayed in the Commercial Hotel coffee room until 1929. A resident priest supplied from Bodmin was in Wadebridge by 1932.
Music and liturgy
The parish runs a full RCIA programme led by the Parish Priest and two catechists for those seeking full communion with the Catholic Church. The First Holy Communion course runs during term-time between October and May for children in Year 3 and above, with children's sessions led by catechists and parents' sessions by the Parish Priest. A Confirmation programme runs between October and Eastertide when need arises.
Parish life
The Parish Centre Committee meets every three months to discuss the running and upkeep of the parish centre. The Bodmin branch of SPUC, established in 1984, is involved in education, lobbying, prayer witness, an annual Human Chain vigil, and silent vigils outside Bodmin and Truro hospitals most Saturdays.
Sacraments and pastoral care
Children aged seven or over are asked to take part, with their parents, in a longer period of preparation for Baptism. Engaged couples should contact the parish priest, and at least six months notice is required by Church law for marriage preparation. The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults is a process in which adults are initiated in the Catholic faith, sharing faith in a group setting, with a programme beginning in the autumn when there are enquirers. In the New Year those wishing to go further commit themselves as catechumens (unbaptised) or candidates (baptised in other traditions), leading to Easter when adult initiation takes place. Confessions are heard on request after all masses except Sunday Masses outside Bodmin.
