Holy Spirit and St. Edward, Swanage

Introduction

Holy Spirit and Saint Edward in Swanage, within the Diocese of Plymouth, was built in 1904 and designed by Canon A Scoles.

Architecture and furnishings

The church is built in a "Decorated" Gothic style. The church has Purbeck Stone walls and a modern tiled roof. The church comprises a nave, chancel, west (liturgical south) transept, and an open bell-cote over the crossing. The west (north) wall features a central arched doorway with a sculptured tympanum and a large traceried window above.

Inside, the church has plastered walls and canted plaster ceilings to the nave and chancel, with the nave ceiling having wood ribs. Purbeck Stone boundary walls with "rustic" capping and modern iron gates run along Victoria Avenue and Rempstone Road. Paintings behind the high altar and chapel (transept) altar date from c1926, with the one behind the high altar depicting Saint Edward of Corfe Castle. The nave has two-light traceried windows.
