About Metropolitan Cathedral Church of St. David

Metropolitan Cathedral Church of St. David is a Roman Catholic church in Cardiff, South Glamorgan. It is part of the Archdiocese of Cardiff-Menevia.

History

Designed by Pugin and Pugin and built by John Devlin of Glasgow, the new church on Charles Street opened and was consecrated on 24 May 1887. Saint David’s was declared Cardiff’s cathedral in 1920. Incendiary bombs set the cathedral on fire on 3 March 1941 during an attack aimed at Cardiff Docks, and worship then returned to the original Saint David’s Church.

Notable features

An organ built by the John Compton Organ Company in 1959 has pipes in two chambers in the bell tower, controlled from a three-manual console in the gallery.
