About St. Patrick

St. Patrick is a Roman Catholic church in Cardiff, South Glamorgan. It is part of the Archdiocese of Cardiff-Menevia.

Introduction

Saint Patrick's Church in Cardiff traces its origins to a first church opened on October 1st 1882, built by Cannon Hallahan.

History

The foundation stone for the present church was laid by the Archbishop on Saint Patrick's Day 1929. The new church was opened exactly one year later, on Saint Patrick's Day 1930. In May 1911 plans were drawn up for the presbytery, which was completed in 1912. During the Second World War, a parish fire fighting group saved the church from destruction by putting out fire bombs on the roof.

After the war, the nave showed signs of subsidence and a massive reconstruction was undertaken at great cost. The altar rails and large pulpit were removed and a new altar placed in front of the high altar.

Parishioners going into hospital are encouraged to inform the hospital they are Catholic to request a visit from the Catholic hospital chaplain. Guidance leaflets for the Sacrament of Reconciliation are available at the back of the church.
