About Our Lady and Saint Gregory, Market Bosworth

Our Lady and Saint Gregory, Market Bosworth is a Roman Catholic church in Market Bosworth, Leicestershire. It is part of the Diocese of Nottingham.

Introduction

Our Lady and Saint Gregory in Market Bosworth, in the Diocese of Nottingham, opened in 1931 with a capacity for 65 people, later increased via extensions.

History

In 1923 a small congregation began meeting monthly for Mass at rooms in the Red Lion Inn, celebrated by Father Leonard Middleton. From 1929 to 1931 the mass centre was the home of Mrs Trivett. Land for the church was given by Sir Arthur Wheeler, brother of a Mrs Sutton. The church was served faithfully from Earl Shilton for many years by a priest from that parish.

Mrs Sutton donated a statue of the Madonna and Child, brought back from Lourdes, still in situ over the doorway. Saint Gregory the Great helped develop the chant that bears his name, Gregorian Chant.
