About Saint Peter, Hinckley

Saint Peter, Hinckley is a Roman Catholic church in Hinckley, Leicestershire. It is part of the Diocese of Nottingham.

Introduction

Saint Peter in Hinckley, within the Diocese of Nottingham, is served by a church built and dedicated in December 1993, the fifth such building for the town's Catholics.

History

Dominican Father Matthew Thomas Norton OP settled permanently in the area in 1759, continuing a missionary tradition that had begun in the 1730s. A new church was constructed in 1958 and 1959. The Dominicans ended their 255-year presence in the town in September 1989.

Architecture and furnishings

The current church keeps several elements from the older 1958 building, including pews, Stations of the Cross, the Tabernacle, and the large Credo window. The figure of Christ the Mediator, which once decorated the front wall of the old church, has been placed on a plinth in the current church grounds.
