About Saints Peter and Paul, Earl Shilton
Saints Peter and Paul, Earl Shilton is a Roman Catholic church in Earl Shilton, Leicestershire. It is part of the Diocese of Nottingham.
Introduction
The church and parish in Earl Shilton owes its existence to the Worsley-Worwicks of nearby Normanton Hall. The church opened at Easter 1907, built on land donated in Mill Lane with money donated by the family. The new church of St Peter and Saint Paul was designed in 1982 as part of a housing development known as the Cloisters.
History
Before the church was built, Catholics in the village worshipped in the private chapel of Normanton Hall at Normanton Turville. In November 1910 a school facility was added to the church, accommodating 53 pupils. In 1921 the stone marble altar from Normanton was transferred to the church. A late parish priest also served the church of Our Lady and Saint Gregory in Market Bosworth.
As the parish expanded, the old Methodist Chapel was taken over and used for services. The parish invited asylum seekers to its Home from Home days, a warm hub, and a social evening.
