About Our Lady and the English Martyrs, Burnham on the Sea
Our Lady and the English Martyrs, Burnham on the Sea is a Roman Catholic church in Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset. It is part of the Diocese of Clifton.
Introduction
Our Lady and the English Martyrs in Burnham-on-Sea, within the Diocese of Clifton, traces its Catholic presence to 1871, when Mass was celebrated monthly in a Highbridge cottage, as no church existed in Burnham or Highbridge until the La Retraite Sisters arrived from France in 1888.
History
The La Retraite Sisters' large Chapel became the Parish Church of the Sacred Heart, opening in 1890. In 1967 the new 'Round' church was built a short way up the road on the site of former allotments; the church is actually elliptical in shape. In 2007 discussions began on how to improve and make more use of the interior; the refurbished church was opened in November 2011.
Parish life
Parish volunteers include people singing in the choir. The Mudlarks Community Choir, directed by Peter Olsen, is a non-audition group that sings unaccompanied four-part harmony music from around the world, meeting weekly at OLEM during term times. The parish supports the Local Food Bank, which is run by members of churches in the district. A representative group of parishioners works with the parish priest as a forum where vision is translated into action, meeting regularly and holding an Annual Parish Meeting. The Flower Team meets annually to draw up a rota, works in pairs at fortnightly intervals to keep fresh flowers in the Church, and decorates the Church for weddings, funerals, and Baptisms.
