About Our Lady of Grace, Charlton
Our Lady of Grace, Charlton is a Roman Catholic church in Charlton, Greater London. It is part of the Archdiocese of Southwark.
Introduction
The church was opened and dedicated to Our Lady of Grace on 8th September 1906. Bishop Amigo of Southwark laid the foundation stone on 27th August 1905. War damage was repaired and a lady chapel, baptistry and new entrance were added along the western side in 1958-60.
Architecture and furnishings
One of the sisters carved a life size statue of Our Lady out of wood and plaster, installed in the alcove above the high altar. The Stations of the Cross were installed in the church in 1907. A new organ and coke-fired heating were installed in 1925-27. Both altar and pulpit originally had carved wooden canopies, removed in the early 1960s.
The present organ was installed in 1970 to replace the original. The Baptism font was moved to its present position in 1985.
Parish life
The current parish hall was built in 1922-23 by the parishioners for use as school and parish hall. The school opened on 8th January 1929 with 270 pupils. In March 1939 Archbishop Amigo blessed and opened the newly completed school and hostel. In 1945 St Joseph High School closed and the Sisters opened a girls primary school.
