About Our Lady of Perpetual Succour
Our Lady of Perpetual Succour is a Roman Catholic church in Barton under Needwood, Staffordshire. It is part of the Archdiocese of Birmingham.
Introduction
Our Lady of Perpetual Succour Catholic Church in Barton under Needwood opened in 1963.
History
Masses had been celebrated in Barton from April 1945, initially in a large house in Dunstall Road and then in an Anglican Church hall. The present site was acquired through the energy and vision of the priest who lived at the presbytery of St Francis de Sales Church from 1956 to 1966. The church was dedicated on 7th April 2005.
Music and liturgy
The Daughters of Divine Love started a monthly Holy Hour for Vocations at Haunton, which Barton folk have attended. A parishioner suggested saying the 'Come Holy Spirit' prayer before every Mass, individually or together.
Parish life
The parish held fundraisers for St Giles Hospice. The church hall hosted Stations of the Cross first prayer point. The church hall hosted post Sunday Mass refreshments. The Post Alpha Barton Pilgrims Group meets in the church hall every 4-6 weeks. In Lent 2025 the parish ran a six-part series titled 'Believe – Reflecting on the Creed' in the church hall.
Sacraments and pastoral care
Baptism is by appointment. Marriage requires a minimum of six months notice. Sacrament of Reconciliation can be arranged by request. Parishioners going into hospital are advised to inform staff they are Catholic and wish to receive a visit from the Catholic Chaplain.
