About St. Peter and St. Paul

St. Peter and St. Paul is a Roman Catholic church in Lichfield, Staffordshire. It is part of the Archdiocese of Birmingham.

Introduction

The church of Ss Peter and Paul in Lichfield, within the Archdiocese of Birmingham, was opened on 29 June 1967, the feast of Saints Peter and Paul.

History

Holy Cross church was opened in November 1803, and Father John Kirk remained in charge until his death in 1851. In 1834 the chapel was extended and a bell tower added. A new schoolroom was built at the rear of the church in 1899 to accommodate 100 pupils. A small chapel, Our Lady of Victories, was opened at Whittington Barracks in 1914.

A second Catholic primary school, Ss Peter & Paul, was built alongside the new church and opened in September 1972. When the church was built in 1967 a Compton Electrone Organ was installed. The parish choir was established shortly after the church opened in 1967.

Parish life

New hymnals, 'Celebration Hymnal for All', were bought for the parish in 2015/16. Children from St Joseph's and SS Peter & Paul schools occasionally lead the music liturgy for Communion and Confirmation services. Many parish children attend St Francis of Assisi Catholic secondary school in Aldridge.

Visiting

Prayer cards are available at both Holy Cross and St Peter and Paul churches for praying for Christians in the Holy Land. The parish group has held periods of reflection for the Holy Land, particularly focused around Lent and Advent.
