About Our Lady of Perpetual Succour & St Cumin's RC Church
Our Lady of Perpetual Succour & St Cumin's RC Church is a Roman Catholic church in Morar, Highland. It is part of the Diocese of Argyll and the Isles.
Introduction
The church was built with stone from the Kinlochmorar Quarries, with grey basalt rowed down the loch and dressed on site by mason Archibald Clachair MacLellan of Mallaig.
Architecture and furnishings
The church's roof, which from inside resembles an upturned boat, was raised by Messrs MacNab. The tower recalls the monastic round towers of Ireland, especially Glendalough, although the church's style of architecture is Early English. Two stained-glass windows honouring St Columba and St Margaret of Scotland were designed by John Duncan, artist of the Celtic Revival.
Music and liturgy
The parish has no organist, so the undertakers must advise on the availability of music. Only religious music is permitted for the funeral liturgy, and no recorded music can be played because the parish does not have a PLL License. A piper is allowed to play the pipes outside the church, as is the custom, but non-religious music is not permitted inside during liturgies.
Parish life
The parish arranges the anointing of the sick, with home visits or hospital visits made through the priest or ward staff. The parish provides hospital chaplaincy visits with Communion for parishioners admitted to hospital.
Sacraments and pastoral care
The body of the deceased may be received into the church the evening before the funeral, in a short service usually attended only by close family. Anyone who is not a Catholic or who is unable to receive Holy Communion is welcome to come forward and receive a blessing from the priest at Communion.
