About Our Lady of the Annunciation (St Maries), Standish

Our Lady of the Annunciation (St Maries), Standish is a Roman Catholic church in Standish, Greater Manchester. It is part of the Archdiocese of Liverpool.

Introduction

The Guides at St Marie's were founded in 1981 and celebrated their 25th anniversary in 2006. The Mill Hill Red Mission Boxes have been in Standish since before 1936. The Standish Council of the Knights of Saint Columba was formed in 1964.

Parish life

The Justice and Peace group acts as needed to oppose injustices and support those who suffer, rather than holding regular meetings. The parish supports two local Catholic primary schools: Saint Marie's in Standish and Saint Bernadette's in Shevington. Guides, Brownies and Rainbows attend Church Parade from time to time.

Sacraments and pastoral care

Most young people are confirmed when they are 13 years or older, with Animate Youth helping pupils in Year 8 and above prepare. A minimum of 8 months is usually required from initial appointment to completion of marriage preparation and legal paperwork. Adults celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time after their full initiation during Eastertide, while children do so before Confirmation and Eucharist as part of the Archdiocese advised Programme.
