About St. Bernadette, Shevington

St. Bernadette, Shevington is a Roman Catholic church in Shevington, Greater Manchester. It is part of the Archdiocese of Liverpool.

Parish life

The parish supports two local Catholic primary schools: Saint Marie's in Standish and Saint Bernadette's in Shevington. The Justice and Peace group raises awareness of and opposes injustices in the world, including prayers for peace, refugee relief and Christmas appeals for the homeless. The Association for the Propagation of the Faith (APF) – Mill Hill Red Mission Boxes have been in Standish since before 1936, with volunteers emptying the boxes four times a year. The Knights of Saint Columba Standish Council was formed in 1964 and fundraises for the national charity and local causes. The Guides at St Marie's were founded in 1981 and celebrated their 25th anniversary in 2006, with Brownies and Rainbows also attending Church Parade.

Sacraments and pastoral care

Most young people are confirmed when they are 13+ years old, with Animate Youth, part of the Archdiocese, helping pupils in Year 8 and above prepare for the sacrament. A minimum of 8 months is usually required from initial appointment to completion of marriage preparation and legal paperwork. Adults celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the First Time after their full initiation during Eastertide and children before they receive the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist as part of the Archdiocese advised Programme.
