About Our Lady of the Assumption and Saint Meddan

Our Lady of the Assumption and Saint Meddan is a Roman Catholic church in Troon, South Ayrshire. It is part of the Diocese of Galloway.

History

The church was designed by architect Reginald Fairlie, who was commissioned by the parish priest and the 4th Marquess of Bute, who paid for its building. The foundation stone was laid on 15 August 1910, the Feast of the Assumption. The church opened on 8 December 1911, the feast of the Immaculate Conception. In 1961, to celebrate the golden jubilee, a statue of St Meddan was carved by Hew Lorimer and erected on the outside north wall.

Architecture and furnishings

In the early 1930s, an altarpiece was built from Bath Stone inlaid with Italian mosaics and French marble. In 1934, an organ was installed to mark 25 years for the parish priest in Troon. The church is a cruciform-plan Scots Late Gothic building with a squat 3-stage rectangular tower, crocketed spire, 5-bay nave, and polygonal apse. The church is built of squared and snecked bull-faced cream rubble sandstone with polished sandstone dressings and red sandstone chequering to the apse base. The interior has a 5-bay arcaded nave with droved ashlar octagonal columns, a narthex with organ loft, and a chancel with stone, marble and mosaic reredos. The church has an open timber roof with carved apostles protruding from hammerbeams, and carved narratives depicting the stations of the cross lining the aisle walls. The pulpit features linen-fold carved detail.

Parish life

The parish's St Anne's Guild, founded on 17 February 1947, continues to thrive with around 45 women members. A gardening group seeks volunteers for grass-cutting and general gardening. The church's HCPT Group 138, including parishioners, fundraised to take a group to Lourdes at Easter 2026.
