About Our Lady of the Rosary, Brixton

Our Lady of the Rosary, Brixton is a Roman Catholic church in Brixton, Greater London. It is part of the Archdiocese of Southwark.

Introduction

Our Lady of the Rosary in Brixton, within the Archdiocese of Southwark, was designed by Arthur J. Phelps and built in 1870 by Myers & Son. Formerly the Brixton Independent Church, it reopened in 1953 as a Catholic Church.

History

The church was heavily damaged during the Second World War and subsequently put on the market. It was acquired by the Diocese and repaired and adapted for Catholic use by Alleyn & Mansel. In 2010 the apse was embellished with Byzantine-style mural paintings by Mauritzia Lees.

Architecture and furnishings

The galleries in the nave aisles were removed (apart from their structural framework) and the church hall demolished and replaced with a new hall and vestry. Alterations were made to the forecourt area, including the addition of a baptistery, and the restored church was opened on 8 December 1953. In 1960 the former clergy house was demolished and replaced with a new presbytery built from designs by Justin Alleyn. The parish invites parishioners to join the Choir and the board of Lecture.

Visiting

Visitors can patronise the parish repository after Mass, where a good selection of cards, diaries, calendars, sacramentals, and similar items is available. The repository offers the 2026 Catholic Directory and Art Calendar for sale. The parish hall can be booked, with contact details provided. When the regular toilets are not functioning, toilets are available in the hall for parishioners.
