About Sacred Heart

Sacred Heart is a Roman Catholic church in Coventry, West Midlands. It is part of the Archdiocese of Birmingham.

Introduction

Sacred Heart church in Coventry was built in 1976 on the old school site in Harefield Road, adjoining the earlier church which became the Parish Hall.

History

The parish's origins trace back to 1922 when Father Joseph Walsh, parish priest of Saint Mary's, was asked to build a new parish in the Stoke area of Coventry. Around Christmas 1928, Archbishop Williams appointed Father Bernard Hayward as parish priest, and soon afterwards the church of the Sacred Heart was built. The church was dedicated in 2016.

Music and liturgy

The Folk Group is folk in instrumentation and approach, regarding itself as leading rather than performing music. During school sacramental preparation Masses, the school choir and staff music group provide music for the liturgy. Choir members attend seasonal training sessions by CJM and meet on Saturday mornings to prepare for the Sunday liturgy. During Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter, special celebrations and activities are arranged for the children's spiritual preparation. The Catechists are commissioned each year at a Mass in the Autumn Term to celebrate the Blessing of the School Year.

Parish life

National Lottery grants funded restoration of the Church Hall floor, LED lighting panels, and a new heating system. Exploring our Faith is a series of meetings held in the Parish Hall on Thursday evenings to explore the Catholic faith. A Justice and Peace Group has been set up to inform the parish community of world-wide moral and ethical issues. Parishioners cook supper for those staying in the Peace House in Coventry and help with the city-wide network of night shelters during winter. The Sacred Heart Folk Group provides music for Sunday family Mass and for the main services at Christmas and Easter.
