About St Mary and St Benedict

St Mary and St Benedict is a Roman Catholic church in Coventry, West Midlands. It is part of the Archdiocese of Birmingham.

History

The church was opened on 21 November 1893 in the presence of Cardinal Vaughan, the first cardinal in Coventry since the Reformation. In 1889, the Hillfields area became a separate parish with Father Placid Rea OSB as its founder. In 1891 a plot of land adjoining the Convent was purchased and plans for the building were drawn up. A bazaar held in the Corn Exchange added a further £800 to the building fund. The original parish consisted of a nave, chapel, baptistery, entrance porch, sacristy and organ gallery. The church was not built until 1893.

Architecture and furnishings

A large sculpture representing the crowning of the Blessed Virgin Mary fills the arch at the back of the high altar. Lady Gwendoline Petre gave the marble altar, whose centre front panel depicts the Annunciation. The pulpit, a gift from Mrs Thomas Halpin in memory of her brother G.B Tew, was inaugurated in 1894.

Parish life

The parish serves the community through worship, education, and outreach, guided by the values of faith, hope, and charity. A Youth Ministry program engages young members with activities and teachings that inspire growth in faith and community service. Adult Bible Study sessions are offered to deepen understanding and connection to the Word of God. Outreach programs aim to assist those in need within the local community. Support is provided for vulnerable women. Welcome and support are offered for refugees and migrants.
