About Sacred Heart

Sacred Heart is a Roman Catholic place of worship in Southwold, Suffolk. It is listed by the Diocese of East Anglia.

Introduction

Sacred Heart Church in Southwold, in the Diocese of East Anglia, was blessed and opened on the Feast of Corpus Christi, 22 June 1916, the first church Southwold had seen in nearly 300 years.

History

In 1897, James Crimmen extended his home, the Manor House on the High Street, to provide a chapel named St Peter's Oratory, and Fr Alexander Scott celebrated the first Mass there in June 1897. Fr Mason served the Southwold Mission for over 40 years, was made Canon of the diocese of Northampton in 1938, and died on 11 November 1940. In 1923, the Sacred Heart side altar became the War Memorial Altar. The building was completed on 10 November 1915, when Fr Mason placed the last stone in the tower.

Architecture and furnishings

The church has a tower over 100ft, is orientated north–south, and is built in the late Gothic style. The design echoes the late Gothic style of Solesmes Abbey, which the architect visited in 1912. Above the High Altar hangs a picture of the Holy Family with the Child Baptist, Tobias and the Angel after Bonifacio Veronese. A Schubert setting is performed in English.

Parish life

By the beginning of the twenty-first century, the Catholic community of the Sacred Heart was closely linked to their sisters and brothers of all denominations in Southwold.

Visiting

An interior staircase leads to a viewing terrace on the church's tower. From the tower terrace, visitors can see the town, the River Blyth, the sea, and the Suffolk countryside. While visiting the tower, guests are also invited to view the church's interior. After Mass, the church remains open for private prayer.
