About Saint Aloysius (Springburn)
Saint Aloysius (Springburn) is a Roman Catholic church in Springburn, Glasgow City. It is part of the Archdiocese of Glasgow.
Architecture and furnishings
The first church of Saint Aloysius in Springburn, in Gothic style, was begun in 1855 and solemnly blessed and opened on 22 June 1856. The south main entrance features an arched stone ceiling, richly shafted and carved arches, an ornamental iron gate, and a carved panel of Saint Aloysius in the tympanum. At the street end of the centre aisle, a lofty gable surmounted by a cross rises sixty feet above the road and contains a large shafted and cusped three-light lancet window. A pinnacle fleche at the intersection of transepts and main roof rises to 100 feet, serves as the ventilation-shaft, and was intended for use as a bell-turret. The church is designed in the early decorated style of Gothic architecture, with three roomy aisles and open timber roofs. Short transepts contain the organ chamber and baptistery in a small semi-octagon on the east, and the main entrances and stair to the organ gallery on the west. The Lady Chapel altar and two stained glass windows there were presented by the incumbent and his brother Rev. D. Conway of Port Glasgow. The building accommodates 1000 persons and was erected at a cost of about 3000 pounds. The church was opened on 7 September 1882 by Archbishop Eyre.
Parish life
The parish has occasionally celebrated Mass in the ancient Syro-Malabar Rite, to which many Indian parishioners belong. The parish community includes all ages, and many retired parishioners worked at Cowlairs Industrial Plant, which specialised in building locomotives. The western aisle is terminated by the sacristy, its upper wall pierced by a rose-window; in the eastern aisle is placed the Lady Chapel and altar.
