About St. Mungo

St. Mungo is a Roman Catholic church in Townhead, Glasgow City. It is part of the Archdiocese of Glasgow.

Introduction

The church is an Italianate Gothic Roman Catholic church with a rectangular plan.

History

The parish was founded in 1850. Since 1865 the parish has been in the care of the Passionists. In 1999 Saint Stephen's Parish, Sighthill, was united with Saint Mungo's.

Architecture and furnishings

The church is built of cream sandstone, squared and snecked with ashlar base. The tower is a squat, incomplete square tower flanking the entrance gable to the W. The church has pointed arch clerestory windows with cusped 2-light windows and circular oculi above. The church has square lead-pane glazing and grey slates.

The gable is topped with a trefoil oculus at its apex and a cross finial. At the southeast angle stands a polygonal spirelet with lancets on each face, crowned by a stone spire carved with fish-scale bands.
