About Saint Mary

Saint Mary is a Roman Catholic church in Fochabers, Moray. It is part of the Diocese of Aberdeen.

Introduction

Completed in 1826, the church is built in early nineteenth century gothic style with a sandstone facade and rubble walls.

History

Father Peter Weir served at St Mary's from 1858 to 1909 and had the present sanctuary added. In May 1886 Bishop McDonald used the new cream stone altar for the first time when he visited for confirmation. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is available on request.

Architecture and furnishings

The sanctuary ceiling has azure blue panels with a stenciled medieval letter M design. A stained glass window in memory of the Clapperton family depicts the Crucifixion with the Virgin and St John. A second window, in six panels, illustrates the Annunciation, Visitation, Presentation in the Temple, Assumption, Seven Dolours and Immaculate Conception. The windows were designed and supplied by the firm of Mayer and Son, Munich. The fourteen Stations of the Cross have brightly painted figures in relief plaster work with massive oak frames, each with a cross on top.
