About St Ninian

St Ninian is a Roman Catholic church in Tynet, Moray. It is part of the Diocese of Aberdeen.

Introduction

St Ninian's Church in Tynet was built in 1755, renovated in 1787 and the early twentieth century, and restored in 1951.

History

The church replaced a church in St Ninian's burial ground at Chapelford, which had been desecrated by soldiers in 1728. The church was originally thatched, but in 1787 it was slated, re-using slates from the abandoned church at Chapelford. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is available on request.

Architecture and furnishings

The church has a ball finial at the west gable apex, dating from about 1787. The church has a small octagonal pulpit from 1787 with an octagonal sounding board. The building is a simple long, low single-storey structure with a 10-bay south elevation featuring regular fenestration. The church is harled with ashlar dressings, and has a plain square-headed entrance in the penultimate southwest bay and a sacristy doorway in the end east bay. The rear north elevation has six windows, mainly with 12-pane glazing.
