About St. Gregory

St. Gregory is a Roman Catholic church in Preshome, Moray. It is part of the Diocese of Aberdeen.

Introduction

The foundation stone of Saint Gregory in Preshome was laid on 29 May 1788, and the chapel opened for Mass on 23 May 1790.

History

In 1820 a 'powerful and elegant organ' was put in the chapel, acquired from Edinburgh largely through the efforts of Mr Alexander Badenoch. The sanctuary was enlarged to the east under the direction of Peter Paul Pugin in 1896, taking away the original sacristy. The two Holy Water stoups in the porch were the gift of the Countess Findlater, made of Portsoy marble.

Architecture and furnishings

The gable was intended to bear the coat of arms of the Letterfourie (Gordon) family, and a fine monument to the brothers was planned inside, but neither project was carried out. Pugin insisted on removing the painting of St Gregory, but was told it must remain as the altar-piece, and he completed the design accordingly.
