About Sclerder Abbey – Chemin Neuf Community
Sclerder Abbey – Chemin Neuf Community is a Roman Catholic church in Looe, Cornwall. It is part of the Diocese of Plymouth.
Introduction
The monastery at Sclerder Abbey was built around the 1840s and was extended in the late nineteenth century, the 1920s, and in 1937. During the 1840s, Franciscan monks at Sclerder celebrated mass in the chapel at Trelawne, which Sir Harry Trelawney had opened for public worship.
Architecture and furnishings
The building is constructed of stone rubble with slate roofs and gable ends, and the 1937 extension has a red brick front wall. The main range has an overall H-shaped plan with a refectory in the central range, kitchens in the left cross wing, and the sister's chapel in the right cross wing. The main range is behind a high stone wall, with a regular 4-window front and entrance in the left-hand angle of the central range and cross wing. The 3-storey gatehouse on the road side has a double gabled asymmetrical 2-window front, with ground floor featuring two 3-light mullion windows flanking a moulded 2-centred arch with a double plank door and ornate hinges. High stone rubble walls run along the north front and continue along the east side of the monastery, with stone rubble walls to the public cemetery on the east featuring a series of semi-circular niches.
Notable people and events
Sir Harry Trelawney, a convert who later became a Catholic Bishop in Rome, and his daughters Letitia Trelawney and Mary Harding were associated with Sclerder Abbey. Letitia Trelawney, Mary Harding, and Lewis Harding are buried at Sclerder Abbey.
