About St Anselm and St Cecilia
St Anselm and St Cecilia is a Roman Catholic church in London, Greater London. It is part of the Archdiocese of Westminster.
Introduction
On 6th July 1909, the last Mass was celebrated in the old Chapel of the Royal Sardinian Embassy. The youth choir presents a carol service at Christmas and plays an integral role in the Easter liturgies.
Architecture and furnishings
Above the side entrance to the south on an interior wall reposes the Royal Sardinian coat-of-arms. Tradition maintains that the Lady Altar was the High Altar of the old Chapel. In the church hangs a large painting of the Descent from the Cross reputed by Charles Heckthorn to have been painted by Benjamin West. Rudolph Ackermann felt that the painting had been done by John Marcus Rigaud, RA.
Music and liturgy
Since the time of the Royal Sardinian Chapel, music has been seen as central to the life of this parish. On All Souls' Day each year, the parish sings the setting of the Libera me written for the Sardinian Chapel by Dr Thomas Arne.
Sacraments and pastoral care
The parish offers a programme for those interested in becoming Catholic, starting with Lectio Divina meetings on Tuesdays, moving into Alpha and then Beta.
Notable people and events
Thomas Augustine Arne, the most distinguished of the Chapel's musicians, wrote several works for the Sardinian Chapel, including a setting of the Libera me.
