About St. Augustine ,Apostle of England. High Wycombe

St. Augustine ,Apostle of England. High Wycombe is a Roman Catholic church in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. It is part of the Diocese of Northampton.

Music and liturgy

Anyone may sing in the choir, including people who are not part of the regular congregation. Music festivals in Marlow, Maidenhead and Slough have included the choir as a representative of the parish. In earlier years the choir entered the Sainsbury's Choir of the Year competition. In some years the choir sings Christmas carols in the town centre to raise funds for local charities or to support mission events.

The choir accepts singers aged under 8 or over 80. Reading music is not required of choir members.

Parish life

Flower arrangers, women or men, prepare weekly altar arrangements each Sunday and provide flowers for special occasions through the year. A contribution towards the cost of those flowers is provided each time.

The founding year of High Wycombe Council 422 is 1949. The former May Fayre included stalls for books, bric-a-brac, fancy goods, plants and toys, together with tombolas, bouncy castles, face painting and other children's games. The church car park is small and easily congested, and is best avoided at the main Sunday services unless someone has difficulty walking.

Sacraments and pastoral care

Confirmation classes usually take place in the Upper Room. Practising Catholic laymen and their families can find friendship, social activities and support through the Catenian Association. From 1981 to 2019 the May Fayre was the major social and fundraising event on the parish calendar.

Visiting

Someone who already visits parishioners, friends or family may become an auxiliary member or a Friend of Saint Augustine's SVP. A ramp gives access to the middle door on the south side, and seats can be moved for wheelchair users. The Upper Room has no step-free outside access, but a lift from inside the church reaches the first floor, with level access to the Upper Room and a disabled-friendly toilet. A loop system is available for people who are hard of hearing.

Large-print bulletins and a coned-off parking space for a wheelchair can be made available on request. The address is 24 Amersham Hill, just above the railway station, on the A404, where there is no parking on the road or pavements. An arrangement with the owners of nearby premises provides parking for everyone attending Sunday services. The former parking arrangement with the Old Registry, just down from the church on the same side, has ended, and its grounds are no longer for church parking.
