About St Augustine - Runcorn
St Augustine - Runcorn is a Roman Catholic church in Runcorn, Cheshire. It is part of the Diocese of Shrewsbury.
Introduction
Saint Augustine's parish in Runcorn opened in December 1969 to serve the Castlefields Estate and part of Halton Village, and the first priest lived in Richard Close. In 1977 the present church of Saint Augustine in Runcorn opened at the same time as a new presbytery. Local historian Bert Starkey recorded that the name of Saint Augustine's parish in Runcorn commemorates the Augustinian monks of Norton Priory.
History
Saint Augustine's parish in Runcorn came into being with Our Lady's, Holy Spirit and Saint Martin de Porres as part of Runcorn's development as a New Town. Before the present church, Sunday Mass for Saint Augustine's parish in Runcorn was said in the Tenants' Centre, then a community centre and the school assembly hall, and weekday Mass was said in the priest's house. Each Friday Mass is followed by the parish praying a Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
