About St. Bede, Masbrough

St. Bede, Masbrough is a Roman Catholic church in Rotherdam, South Yorkshire. It is part of the Diocese of Hallam.

Introduction

Saint Bede's in Masbrough, Rotherdam, within the Diocese of Hallam, began with its foundation stone laid on 29th July 1841 by Benjamin Badger, who had given the land. The church was opened on Wednesday 5th October 1842, dedicated by Rt Rev Dr Briggs, Bishop of the District. Weightman and Hadfield served as the architects for this church.

History

Before this church, Mass had been celebrated in a 'very mean property' whose lease expired in 1841. In the 1930s, the church was extended by the addition of the choir loft, built as a memorial to the dead of the parish killed in the Great War. The church is built in the style of English architecture which prevailed at the close of the fourteenth century.

Notable features

The chancel gable has a niche with a carved effigy of Our Lady and the Infant Saviour in stone. The font is of stone large enough for immersion, with a canopy cover of oak richly carved.
