About St. Chad

St. Chad is a Roman Catholic church in Birmingham, West Midlands. It is part of the Archdiocese of Birmingham.

Architecture and furnishings

The structure is constructed from brick in Flemish bond, featuring Bath stone dressings and slate roofing. Five bells in the south tower were all recast by Taylors of Loughborough in 1940. A high altar by A W Pugin from 1841 includes riddel posts and a carved gable with a cusped arch enclosing the relic chest of Saint Chad. The Lady Chapel contains an 1841 altar by Pugin carved with scenes of the Presentation in the Temple, Nativity and Adoration of the Magi. The Stations of the Cross along both aisles were made by Albrecht Franz Lieven de Vriendt of Antwerp in 1875. The organ at the south end of the nave is housed in a painted Gothic case designed by David Graebe. Music plays a vital role in the life of the cathedral. The St Chad's Cathedral Association supports the Archbishop, Dean and Chapter by funding special projects and activities within the Cathedral.
