About St Edward the Confessor, Chandlers Ford

St Edward the Confessor, Chandlers Ford is a Roman Catholic church in Chandlers Ford, Hampshire. It is part of the Diocese of Portsmouth.

Introduction

St Edward the Confessor Church in Chandlers Ford, within the Diocese of Portsmouth, was erected through the generosity of Mrs Edward Christian and consecrated on 10th March 1938 by Bishop Cotter.

History

The church was doubled in size and cloister rooms were added in 1988/89. The Catholic Parish of St Swithun Wells was inaugurated on 10th December 2010, the feast of St Swithun Wells. The parish brings together five worshipping communities including St Edward the Confessor in Chandlers Ford, previously part of the Three Rivers Pastoral Area. On 3rd September 2018 the Parish of St Swithun Wells was entrusted to the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Charles Borromeo.

Parish life

The parish runs three age-based youth groups: Stars of Abraham for primary school children, Grail Seekers for secondary school pupils, and Student Youth for teenagers from school year 10 to sixth form. The parish collects clothes for the homeless through the Two Saints charity in all its churches. The parish's priests, youth groups and volunteers visit elderly people at home or in care homes to give comfort, support and friendship.

Regular events

Come and See is a holiday club for children and young people aged 7-14 during school holidays and half term breaks. Cultural Fridays are held once a month on a Friday evening to explore connections between faith and human life through a book or music.

Sacraments and pastoral care

Children and teenagers preparing for First Holy Communion (from school year 3) or Confirmation (from school year 9) are asked to attend one of three age-based youth groups regularly, receiving the sacrament when ready, usually after about a year. Parents who want their child baptised must speak directly with a priest, who explains the procedure and helps with preparation. Those interested in joining the Catholic Church can learn more through the RCIA group.
