About St. James the Less, Rawtenstall

St. James the Less, Rawtenstall is a Roman Catholic church in Rawtenstall, Lancashire. It is part of the Diocese of Salford.

Introduction

The church was built in 1845, said to be by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin. The church is built of sandstone random rubble with a steeply-pitched slate roof and large gable copings.

The parish is in the Deanery of St John Vianney. The parish has a population of 4000.

Architecture and furnishings

The church has a nave, a small north-west tower with pyramidal top, and a chancel with side offices. The church is in a simple Early English style. The west gable of the nave has a large triple lancet window flanked by single lancets, with a wheel window above. The two-bay chancel has a triple lancet east window and above this a circular window containing 3 trefoils. The interior is very simple.
