About St. Mary's Church, Bacup

St. Mary's Church, Bacup is a Roman Catholic church in Bacup, Lancashire. It is part of the Diocese of Salford.

Introduction

Saint Mary's Church in Bacup, within the Diocese of Salford, was constructed on Dale Street in 1857.

History

In 1852 Father Henry Mulvany was sent by the Bishop of Salford to further the mission, becoming the first Catholic priest to live in the town. The room over Mr Pilling's ironmongers shop could seat over 300 people and was used for services and as a school. In 1871 the Catholic portion of Bacup cemetery was consecrated and a mortuary chapel was dedicated to St Joseph. The school was moved to Wesley Place.

Parish life

The parish of St Mary & St Anselm, Bacup and Whitworth, was officially unified in 2009, bringing together two longstanding Catholic communities. The first Catholic mission in the area was at Sunnyside, Crawshawbooth, where Catholic families were provided with a building to worship in Pinner Lane, served by the priests of Towneley from 1828 until 1836.
