About St Mary, Aughton

St Mary, Aughton is a Roman Catholic church in Aughton, Lancashire. It is part of the Archdiocese of Liverpool.

Introduction

The exterior of St Mary, Aughton, is stuccoed with slate roofs and features a blind west gable wall with a lozenge window under the apex. The church was built in 1823.

Architecture and furnishings

The gabled porch has a round-headed doorway, and cross finials adorn both the porch and main gables. The south wall of the church contains three tall round-headed windows with glazing bars. Inside, a west gallery with a panelled front is supported by four iron columns. The chancel is separated from the nave by a wall pierced with a large central round-arched opening flanked by smaller similar openings.

Against the east wall, paired engaged Corinthian columns support an enriched entablature, above which is an oval saucer dome. The main body of the church has a flat ceiling with a central circular design. The north wall is blind except for a round window that lights the chancel.
