About St. Mary
St. Mary is a Roman Catholic church in Crathorne, North Yorkshire. It is part of the Diocese of Middlesbrough.
Introduction
In 1816, the resident priest, Father George Corless, began his mission to provide a new chapel.
History
In 1945, the Trust had to sell Chapel House due to insufficient finance to upgrade the drainage and sewage disposal. In 2019, a Fundraising and Restoration Group was set up, hoping that the restoration would be completed for the Chapel's Bi-Centenary in 2021. The restoration was not completed until August 2022 due to the Covid Pandemic. On 8 September 2022, a Celebratory Mass of Thanksgiving was led by the bishop, with several clergy including a monsignor and two priests.
Architecture and furnishings
The church is built of local handmade light red brick in English garden wall bond, with a Welsh slate roof with stone gable coping and bracketed eaves. The church has a Gothick interior with galleries and box pews. The church has a C19 south-west porch in similar style. The church has one tall storey, three windows, Tudor arched and roll-moulded, with interlaced glazing bars and cill band.
