About St Mary Magdalene, Maltby

St Mary Magdalene, Maltby is a Roman Catholic church in Maltby, South Yorkshire. It is part of the Diocese of Hallam.

Introduction

St Mary Magdalene in Maltby, within the Diocese of Hallam, was designed by architect J H Langtry-Langton of Bradford, with its foundation stone laid on 5 August 1954.

History

A Roman Catholic mission was established in 1912 in response to the discovery of coal in the area, with Rev Thomas Parkin as first priest. A temporary timber church opened on 18 January 1914, said to be that now at Harworth. In 1974, the 12th Earl of Scarborough presented an altar stone containing relics from Roche Abbey, which was interred in the altar. The church was built to seat four hundred people and cost approximately £16,000. The Diocese of Hallam celebrates an open air mass in the ruins of Roche Abbey each Trinity Sunday.
