About St. Pancras
St. Pancras is a Roman Catholic church in Lewes, East Sussex. It is part of the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton.
Introduction
In 1930 St Pancras Catholic Primary School was built in De Montfort Road, allowing redevelopment in Irelands Lane.
History
After the 1829 Catholic Emancipation Act allowed Catholics to worship openly, Mass was said at 10 Priory Crescent, overlooking the priory ruins. The Priest's house was built at the same time as the church of 1870. Two cottages on the corner of Irelands Lane, on the site of the present forecourt, were used as a parish school. The church is always open for visitors to pray, even outside of Mass times.
Architecture and furnishings
The stained glass windows in the nave and chancel are from the first church, and a commemorative tablet is found in the Lady Chapel. The most recent development is the addition of the Cluny Annexe, consisting of the Wood Room and Challoner Hall. Other stained glass windows have been added, with St Philip Howard commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the church in 1989, and a modern design marking the new millennium. Mrs Wood made several fine vestments, some of which remain in use.
Visiting
The car park entrance is off Western Road, immediately opposite St Pancras Church, down a lane between a house and the entrance to St Anne's Church. Access to the church and meeting rooms is through new glass doors, not the old church porch.
