About The English Martyrs, Thaxted
The English Martyrs, Thaxted is a Roman Catholic church in Thaxted, Essex. It is part of the Diocese of Brentwood.
Introduction
Before the Second World War, Catholics had to travel to Dunmow, Saffron Walden or Bishop's Stortford to attend Mass; from about 1942 Mass was celebrated at Debden airfield.
History
After the Americans left Debden, Catholic families in Thaxted decided to celebrate Mass in the living room of Park Farm, with Mrs. Ann Latham as the leading figure. In 1950, Mrs. Latham, Molly Herbert and Dinah Perry drove to Rome in a Standard Vanguard, got a private audience with the Pope, and the result was the decision to build a church in Thaxted. Tom Latham donated the land, part of a 2-acre chicken run, and the church was completed in early 1952. The church is constructed with a brick wall to 4/5 ft and an American Nissen hut sides and roof.
Visiting
A copy of the parish's submissions to the Diocese for the Synodal Pathway is available at the back of the church. The church has access for physically disabled people. The church is in a Conservation Area.
