Introduction

Charles Rose Chase, an Anglican clergyman received into the Catholic Church, founded the Catholic Missionary Society and came to Saffron Walden in 1905.

History

The church was established in 1906 as part of the Archdiocese of Westminster. The Missionary Society provided priests until 1918, when the newly-formed Diocese of Brentwood took over. In 1930 the Spanish Vincentian Fathers took charge and remained until 1948. In 1963 a new porch was added to the church.

The church is a Grade 2 listed barn. The church has a south aisle, a baptistery at the west end, a brick porch of 1907, and an east extension with a monopitch roof from the later twentieth century. The church has a queen post roof with a frame of jowled posts and straight through braces, partly missing, with plaster infill and a later ceiling at collar level. The church has a range of three 2-light timber casement clerestory windows with leaded lights to the south, that to the east with a cross casement, and a similar 2-light casement to the north.
