About The Sacred Heart, Rothley
The Sacred Heart, Rothley is a Roman Catholic church in Rothley, Leicestershire. It is part of the Diocese of Nottingham.
Introduction
The Sacred Heart in Rothley, within the Diocese of Nottingham, was formally opened by Dr Dunn on 19 July 1927.
History
At Easter 1924 money was raised to purchase the plot of land in Mountsorrel Lane on which the church now stands. In March 1926 parishioners met to discuss building a church and requested the Rosminians to take over the project; Fr Keating was appointed first permanent parish priest. In August 1929 the church was registered for the solemnising of marriage. Fr Keating was succeeded by Fr John Guise (until 1935), then Fr John Fevez (until 1941), when Fr Denis Horgan was appointed as first parish priest of Saint Theresa’s Church in Birstall and Sacred Heart in Rothley. Bamford of Leicester built the church, with construction beginning in March 1927.
Music and liturgy
Music plays an important part in worship, with a team of players for Masses and special feast days. On the second Sunday, usually just keyboard is used. The liturgy leaders present the Gospel message through stories, songs, pictures and actions, with children making craft work and rejoining at the offertory procession.
Parish life
A small group of parishioners from both churches aims to help the community feel cared for, supported and connected. Welcomers greet parishioners at Saturday evening and Sunday Masses, handing out Mass books, hymn books and newsletters. Parishioners are welcome for tea and coffee in the parish room after Sunday Masses, with volunteers needed to serve refreshments.
The parish is part of a Rosminian cluster of parishes and schools in the English midlands, regularly coming together to share the ideals of the Institute of Charity. A Mass and tea party for the elderly and housebound takes place twice a year on a Saturday afternoon.
