About Our Lady of Mercy and St. Joseph, Lymington
Our Lady of Mercy and St. Joseph, Lymington is a Roman Catholic church in Lymington, Hampshire. It is part of the Diocese of Portsmouth.
Introduction
Our Lady of Mercy and Saint Joseph in Lymington, within the Diocese of Portsmouth, is the oldest building still used as a Catholic parish church in the South-West Hampshire and East Dorset area.
History
Building works commenced in 1858 under architect Joseph A. Hanson, who also designed the Cathedral of St Phillip Howard at Arundel. The solemn opening, blessing and consecration of the altar took place in May 1859, performed by the then Bishop of Southwark. The church was built of local red bricks and Welsh slate by local builder William Rickman.
Architecture and furnishings
The Baptismal font was erected in 1890 in memory of Flora and Joseph Weld in grateful thanks for their generosity and apostolic zeal. The pine pews were presented to the church by Mr James Brown, Mr Weld's solicitor and the Town Clerk.
Parish life
Joseph's Place, opposite the church entrance, housed the area's first Catholic school until a new school opened in Pennington in 2003. Parish history recalls French emigre priests based in Lymington and the benevolence of the Weld Family.
Notable people and events
In 1992 the church entered the Guinness Book of Records because organist Violet Loader was the oldest church organist ever, having played for 69 years and retiring at age 103.
Visiting
A full history of the church is available to download. A grotto to St Bernadette stands in the left-hand corner of the car park, alongside 'box gardens' dedicated to past parishioners.
