About Our Lady
Our Lady is a Roman Catholic church in Stowmarket, Suffolk. It is part of the Diocese of East Anglia.
Introduction
A. E. Purdie designed the church in the 1880s as part of a Gothic school-chapel scheme, and it is the only portion of that larger plan that was built.
History
The worship space was originally the upper floor of the building, but in the late 1960s the church was moved to the ground floor. By the Papal decree of Pope Paul VI, on Saturday March 13th 1976, Stowmarket became a part of the Diocese of East Anglia. 1979 marked the Centenary of the Church of Our Lady, Stowmarket. Our Lady, Stowmarket was the 2nd parish in the Diocese to achieve the LiveSimply Award, which they won in 2016.
Architecture and furnishings
In the Parish Centre, there is a board commemorating the time that the Sisters of Jesus and Mary spent living in the parish from 1975 to 1987, and an icon of Saint Claudine Thevenet.
Parish life
The Seder Meal was a regular event before Easter, mentioned in the memoirs of a parish priest. Once a year the Altar Servers, about 12 in total, would head off on an early summer outing to the beach, Pleasurewood Hills, Duxford Air Museum or Kessingland wildlife park. During the mid 1990s the parish numbers were increased with new parishioners from India, and the parish devised the concept of a World Food Day where a parishioner from each nationality would prepare a dish. Masses for the Sick and Housebound are a regular and popular biannual event at Our Lady's, followed by afternoon tea.
Sacraments and pastoral care
In order that the parish should be recognised as a LiveSimply parish, parishioners were asked to record what they were doing individually or as a household. Inspired by a papal letter, the CAFOD+ group concerned itself with working to secure the LiveSimply Award for the parish.
Visiting
The church has limited parking, reserved for people with limited mobility during busy Mass times, with two large public car parks within a 5 minute walk.
