About St Joseph's

St Joseph's is a Roman Catholic church in Hadleigh, Suffolk. It is part of the Diocese of East Anglia.

Introduction

Building work for the new church commenced in September 1965, aided by £6,000 insurance money, and the foundation stone was laid in January 1966.

History

In 1937 the Diocese was given a derelict factory in Angel Street, Hadleigh by Miss Earles, which was renovated and used as a chapel for Sunday Mass. The chapel at Hadleigh closed in 1940 and was requisitioned by the local authority for evacuees. By 1944 Mass was again being celebrated in the chapel at Hadleigh, with 26 parishioners recorded. On 23 September 1964 a fire destroyed the building used as a chapel at Hadleigh. The first Mass in the completed church was celebrated on 17 July 1966.
