About St. Anselm, Whitworth

St. Anselm, Whitworth is a Roman Catholic church in Whitworth, Lancashire. It is part of the Diocese of Salford.

Introduction

Saint Anselm's Church in Whitworth, within the Diocese of Salford, traces its Catholic mission to 1860 when Bishop William Turner appointed a priest to care for local Catholics.

History

The church, without its tower, and the priest's house were finished and opened on 10 October 1869 by Bishop Turner, with Canon J Gadd preaching. The Great War of 1914-1918 saw 22 parishioners die, and their names are listed on a brass memorial tablet at the back of the church. In 2009 the two existing parishes merged, with a priest becoming Parish Priest of 'The Parish of St Mary & St Anselm', Bacup and Whitworth. The church's official title is Our Immaculate Mother and St Anselm's Catholic church. In 1875 a new rector began an eighteen-year tenure, during which he built and equipped the school and completed the tower, placing in it three bells and a large chiming clock.

Parish life

The parish's mission is to spread the good news by living faith as a Catholic community in worship, service and support for one another. The parish's vision is to be a community that lives out what it believes, building a Christ-centred community where all can grow in faith, love and service.
